Dr. Messmer is a Consultant for Nursing Research & Education in the Benjamín León School of Nursing, Miami Dade College (MDC) with a BSN and PhD from University of Pittsburgh, a MSN and MA from Edinboro University of PA and a diploma from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, Pa. Dr. Messmer's commitment to research, education, and practice is exemplified by her 2010 ANA Jessie Scott Award, 2012 Induction into FNA Hall of Fame and Induction into the 2016 ANA Hall of Fame. Dr. Messmer's creative and international research has received consistent funding in multi-cultural health care organizations, mentoring nurses/physicians to achieve workable clinical solutions including an AHA grant to Teach CPR to the Tune of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”. That same concept evolved at MDC as she mentors nursing faculty to complete their doctoral studies, disseminate and publish their research findings. Dr. Messmer co-authored Private Duty Nurse Undine Sams’: Passion, Power and Political Action; donating Sams’ archival material to Florida International University and University of Miami. She and colleagues published ANF Scholars (1955-2012): Stepping Stones to a Nursing Research Career studied and conducted studies of Imogene King Theory of Goal Attainment, donating King’s archives to University of Virginia and Loyola University-Chicago. Dr. Messmer secured funding for a VA nurse collection for Kansas State Nurses Association headquarters. Dr. Messmer serves as Co-Chair of ANA-PAC Leadership Society, President of the Florida Nurses Foundation and chairs the Nurses Charitable Trust (only 7 nurses philanthropic group in USA). Dr. Messmer serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing and the Journal of the National Black Nurses Association. She serves an advisor to Philippine Nurses Association in Cebu, Philippines, National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN)-Miami chapter and Haitian American Nurses Association (HANA).
