The nation's 2.9 million registered nurses (RNs) are the primary source of care and support for patients at the most vulnerable points in their lives. Nearly every person's health care experience involves a RN. As a result, a sufficient supply of nurses is critical in providing our nation's population with quality health care. Nurses are expected to play an even larger role in the future.

And yet, nurses have to struggle to get the resources that they need. Our work is often ignored or misunderstood, and the nation is facing a debilitating nursing shortage. In order to raise awareness about all aspects of the nursing profession, Representatives Lois Capps (D-CA) and Steven LaTourette (R-OH) have established a bi-partisan Congressional Nursing Caucus. The Nursing Caucus allows members of Congress an open forum to address issues affecting the nursing community. The Caucus also serves as a clearinghouse for information and a sounding board for issues brought forth by the nursing community.

In past Congresses, the Caucus has held regular briefings on matters such as the mandatory overtime, nurse staffing, safe patient handling and movement, and reimbursement for advanced practice RNs. In the new Congress, the Nursing Caucus will examine quality reporting, avian flu, and other important and timely issues. I believe that your office would derive great benefit from belonging to the Congressional Nursing Caucus.
